How VOVE ID Supports J-Pool’s Verification Framework

A partnership between Eykegai and VOVE ID is helping strengthen the identity and verification infrastructure behind J-Pool.

Joining J-Pool as a Pal will take seconds. A face scan and an identity document, checked and confirmed while you wait. Becoming a Host will take at least twenty four hours. That gap is not a gap in our engineering. It is the whole point.

Two different questions

A Pal and a Host are not being asked the same thing, so it would make little sense to check them the same way.

For a Pal, the question is whether you are who you say you are. That is a Know Your Customer check: facial recognition matched against an identity document, resolved instantly, because there is no reason to make someone wait to answer a question that can be answered in seconds.

For a Host, identity is only the beginning. The further question is whether you are fit to carry other people in your car, and that requires Know Your Driver checks: licence validity and DVLA record among them. Those checks draw on external sources that answer in their own time, which is why the process takes at least a day.

Know Your Driver is an established standard across mobility and vehicle rental rather than anything we invented. What matters is that we apply it, and that we do not confuse it with identity verification. Confirming who someone is answers one question. Establishing the capacity in which they are participating answers a different one.

Why any of this matters more here

For most digital products, verification is a fraud control. For J-Pool it is something else, because a digital interaction leads to a physical one.

A Host and a Pal are not only connecting through an app. They will share the same car, often at night, sometimes on a route neither would take alone.

Our own research made this concrete. When we surveyed people about shared journeys, they did not describe trust as a feeling. They described mechanics: verified identities, control over who they travel with, and real accountability. Verified profiles mattered to 85 per cent of the women in that survey and just over 68 per cent of the men.

People told us plainly what they needed. Verification is where we answer them.

How the partnership began

That thinking led Ugochi Ugbomeh, co-founder of Eykegai, to an early meeting with Aoussar Khalid, co-founder of VOVE ID.

The conversation went beyond adding a verification tool to a product. Aoussar understood Eykegai’s wider vision and saw the value in establishing identity and compliance foundations while the products were still early, rather than after scale makes those decisions harder and more expensive. VOVE ID’s compliance initiative for startups exists for exactly that reason.

The meeting became a partnership between Eykegai and VOVE ID, supporting the wider product portfolio, with J-Pool as its most immediate application.

Not building what we should be buying

The partnership also reflects a decision about what J-Pool should and should not be spending its development effort on.

Identity verification and compliance are specialist fields. They involve document verification, fraud prevention, biometric technology, data protection and a regulatory environment that keeps moving. Rebuilding that internally would mean becoming a second company alongside the first, and doing both less well.

Working with a specialist means the J-Pool team stays focused on the product, while the verification layer is handled by people for whom it is the entire job.

What it means across the ecosystem

For community administrators, stronger identity processes give additional confidence about who is participating inside their network.

For Hosts, verification means greater accountability around the people asking to join their Pools.

For Pals, it means the person offering the journey has passed checks that go well beyond confirming a name.

None of this replaces individual judgement, community context or responsible platform operation. It is the foundation those things rest on, not a substitute for them.

Part of a wider plan

Although J-Pool is the most immediate application, the agreement is between Eykegai and VOVE ID.

That distinction matters, because Eykegai’s strategy extends beyond one product. Reusable identity and compliance infrastructure built now gives every product that follows a stronger starting position than J-Pool had.

It also reflects the kind of technology ecosystem we think Scotland benefits from: early-stage companies building alongside specialist partners, rather than each one reconstructing the same foundations in isolation.

We are building a product around trusted communities. Trust cannot live only in the language we use to describe it. It has to exist in the infrastructure underneath.

The VOVE ID integration is currently being implemented, and will be in place for participants joining the Aberdeen pilot.
